Biography

Jeff Williams is an Associate Professor in Studio Art (Sculpture & Extended Media) at the University of Texas at Austin. His work focuses on the properties of materials and their relationship to time. He combines and alters architectural materials, industrial waste, geological formations, and quotidian objects to explore ways to induce and accelerate processes of erosion and decay, illuminating the sensory specificity of materials. His artistic practice functions as form of research, predicated on engineering principles and scientific theories that challenge notions of permanence and certainty in the built environment. Williams was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and raised in Plymouth, Michigan. He studied at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1998, and completed his Master of Fine Arts at Syracuse University in 2002. He was an artist-in-residence at the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from 2006 to 2008 and received the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome in 2008-2009. His recent solo exhibitions include the Jack Hanley Gallery in New York, Contemporary Austin in Texas, and Artpace in San Antonio, among others. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across various prestigious venues.
