The Brain Tumor Research Center at NYU School of Medicine, established in 1992, was awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to support a tumor bank, patient database, and five research projects. These projects focus on critical areas such as tumor suppressor genes in genetically high-risk pediatric brain tumor populations, the interaction of recessive and dominant oncogenes, growth factors, cell adhesion molecules, and cellular immunology. The tumor bank has accrued approximately 3000 frozen and formalin-fixed human brain, spinal, and peripheral nerve tumor specimens. A database tracking patients with neurofibromatosis has also been implemented, facilitating institutional collaborative research projects supported by grants from the Making Headway Foundation. The center engages actively in clinical research protocols in neuro-oncology and participates in institutional cooperative group trials while promoting pharmaceutical collaborations. Since initiating the NYU Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Center in 2008, the center has been rapidly acquiring new staff members and, in 2011, received the esteemed designation of being a member of the NF Clinical Trials Consortium, affording patients with NF1 and NF2 access to advanced clinical trials.
