Jeffrey Berman joined the University of Washington's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering in 2006 after completing his Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research primarily focuses on large-scale destructive experimental investigations involving steel and heavy timber structures, with the aim of blending experimental and analytical methods to create effective design tools for engineers to construct structures that can withstand earthquakes, blasts, and other hazards. He leads the M9 Project, an NSF-supported research initiative that studies the potential impacts of magnitude 9 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquakes on the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, he serves as the Site Operations Director for the NHERI Rapid Facility, overseeing a major shared-use equipment site dedicated to supporting natural hazards reconnaissance efforts based at the University of Washington. As a dedicated educator, he teaches at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and has received the University of Washington's Distinguished Teaching Award. Outside of work, Professor Berman enjoys outdoor activities in the Pacific Northwest with his family and is a lover of live music.
