Dr. Jeffrey Borkan

Biography

Jeffrey Borkan is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Medical Science at Brown University. He has served in various leadership roles including Assistant Dean for Primary Care-Population Health. Borkan's career blends family medicine and medical anthropology, focusing on improving primary care through research, training, and advocacy. His research interests encompass medical education, health policy, cultural humility, and the application of both qualitative and mixed methods in primary care settings. He has contributed significantly to the national healthcare policy dialogue in Rhode Island, chairing the Rhode Island Primary Care Physician Advisory Board and holding leadership positions in several professional organizations. Borkan was involved in major NIH-funded research projects aimed at developing psychosocial treatments and enhancing medical education. He holds a BA from the University of Michigan, an MD, and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University, and has completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Washington. Borkan has published extensively on various topics including doctor-patient communication and health policy decisions, and has received numerous awards for his contributions to medical education and family medicine.
