Biography

Jeffrey Hackney is a Fellow and Tutor in Law at St Edmund Hall, Wadham College, where he has been a member of the Faculty since 1964. His teaching and research interests primarily focus on property law and legal history, with a particular emphasis on Roman law and how it addresses legal interests in a way that resonates with the practices of early common lawyers and their modern successors. Throughout his career, he has been a visiting professor at several North American universities and has spent fifteen years at the Sorbonne, where he has organized continuing education conferences in Oxford for visiting American judges. Hackney has also played a significant role in university administration, having chaired various committees including the Libraries Board and served on the General Board of Faculties and the University's Disciplinary Court. He is also recognized as the founder-director of the New Law Publishing Company, which was a pioneering effort in same-day reporting of judicial decisions in superior courts, particularly in the realm of property and commercial law. In addition to his administrative roles, he teaches Roman law at the colleges.
