Jeffrey (Jeff) S. Kieft earned his BS in Chemistry from the United States Military Academy at West Point before serving as an Army officer in Germany. After leaving active duty, he obtained a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted post-doctoral research under Professor Ignacio Tinoco at Yale University with Jennifer Doudna. In 2009, he was selected as an HHMI Early Career Scientist Awardee and served as Vice Chair of his department and Chair of the NIH study section. Kieft is currently the Executive Director of the New York Structural Biology Center, one of the world's premier centers for integrated structural biology development. His research focuses on understanding RNA structure, conformational changes, and the complex intermolecular interactions that enable diverse RNA functions, particularly the viral RNAs that form complex three-dimensional structures to interact with and manipulate cellular machinery.
