Jeffrey Todd Knight is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Washington, focusing on early modern English literature, particularly Shakespeare. His research interests include the literatures of the past and their impact on collective imagination, examining how interactions with historical works can transform them over time. He is especially drawn to the early modern period and the concept of 'pastness', exploring how the printing press and public theaters provided writers with new means to engage with distant history. His book, Bound Read: Compilations, Collections, Making Renaissance Literature, published by Penn in 2013, delves into how readers and writers in Shakespeare's era deconstructed printed texts and how collectors influenced the creative landscape. Currently, he is completing a public-facing book for Bloomsbury, titled Shakespeare Page: Texts, Books, Readers, and is pursuing additional projects related to the institution of the library and the history of literary scholarship within Anglo-American academia. He co-directs the Textual Studies Program at UW and is involved in the annual Material Texts Colloquium, which focuses on manuscript, print, and digital cultures. Additionally, he has served as an editor for Modern Language Quarterly: Journal of Literary History.
