Biography

Jeffrey B. Matthews, MD, is a distinguished surgeon serving as the Chair and Phemister Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago. His clinical interests encompass biliary gallbladder surgery, islet autotransplantation, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic surgery, and pancreatitis. He engages in academic scholarship focusing on the promotion of equity in surgical practices and has contributed significantly to the literature on surgical education and health inequities. His research includes evaluating the effectiveness of classification systems in surgical morbidity and mortality conferences and investigating therapies for breast cancer through various clinical trials such as the I-SPY2 trial.
