Biography

I am a social scientist and social & cultural historian with a particular focus on 19th and 20th-century history. My research examines the experiences of gay and bisexual men in post-war Scotland, tracing the history of same-sex desire from the 17th century to the late 20th century. Additionally, I engage in gender history, particularly through the analysis of dominant constructs of masculinity and the emergence of 'queer masculinities' from the interwar period onwards. My interests also extend to Scottish historical demography, household forms in Scotland during the mid-19th century to pre-war period, immigration, and poor relief. My recent publications have explored the impact of World War I on women's families in Scotland and the interactions between homosexual law reform organizations and religious institutions. As a member of the Centre for the History of Medicine, I have supported the Equality Network in efforts to pardon historic (homo)sexual offenses and contributed as a historical consultant for media productions on the history of gay Scotland. My academic journey includes significant contributions to various research areas, including same-sex identities, diverse masculinities, and LGBTQ leisure culture in Scotland from 1900 to 1990.
