Professor Dr. Jeffrey Mitchell

Biography

Jeffrey Mitchell is an Associate Professor at Umeå University with a focus on sociology. His research encompasses a broad range of topics, including prejudice, trust in political institutions, and the effects of social policies on marginalized groups in society. He is particularly interested in understanding social change over time and how individuals and societies adapt utilizing longitudinal quantitative methods. Mitchell is affiliated with the Criminology, Racism, Nationalism, and Ethnicity Migration research group. His ongoing research projects examine the impact of vulnerable area designations on health, crime, and trust, as well as the liberalizing effects of higher education and the evolution of prejudice. He teaches courses in criminology, comparative social policy, and quantitative methods at the doctoral level, including topics related to Open Science. His recent publications include a study demonstrating an empirical link between fatal police violence and structural racism, highlighting the critical dynamics shaping societal structures and communities from sociological perspectives.
