Biography

Jeffrey Monaghan is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Carleton University. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s University. His primary research interests focus on the intersections of policing, surveillance practices, and systemic patterns of criminalization and social inequality. He serves on the Editorial Board of the interdisciplinary journal 'Criminological Encounters'. Monaghan's current projects investigate diverse topics, including protest policing, the policing of social movements, police culture, and discretionary criminalization practices. He has published extensively on these themes, contributing to major academic works such as 'Disability Injustice: Confronting Criminalization in Canada' and 'Policing Indigenous Movements: Dissent in the Security State'. Monaghan is also actively involved in teaching undergraduate courses at ICCJ, including Criminological Theories and Policing (In) Security. He is cross-appointed to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the School of Canadian and Indigenous Studies, where he supervises graduate students and participates in various academic committees.
