Professor Jeffrey Steinfeld is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has had a significant academic impact since joining the faculty in July 1966. A graduate from MIT in the 1950s, he earned his S.B. in 1962 and went on to receive his PhD from Harvard University in 1965. His early career was supported by a National Science Foundation Research Fellowship at the University of Sheffield. Throughout his independent career, Professor Steinfeld's research interests evolved to focus on obtaining kinetic data from physical chemical systems using time-resolved spectroscopy. His work ultimately extends to the study of large, interconnected systems such as the Earth System, examining the complex social, technological, and economic systems that humanity depends on over gigascale timeframes (i.e., years). Professor Steinfeld is also actively involved in the MIT Alumni Climate Action (MACA) initiative. Additionally, he has co-authored a textbook with Joseph Francisco and William Hase titled 'Chemical Kinetics and Dynamics', which continues to be in print and includes an associated solutions manual accessible via a link.
