Biography

Jeffrey Todd Streelman is a Professor and Chair in the School of Biological Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research primarily focuses on evolution and genomics, particularly within the context of cichlid fishes from Lake Malawi, which provide unique insights into genotype-phenotype relationships in wild vertebrates. Over the past decade, with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the National Science Foundation, he has developed genomic and molecular biology approaches to address biological questions that are challenging to explore using traditional model organisms. Key research projects include examining tooth and taste bud patterning and regeneration, the genomics of complex behavior, and the developmental diversification of the cranial neural crest and associated structures. By analyzing and manipulating the genomes of various Malawi cichlid species, he aims to translate findings into zebrafish and mouse models, bridging the gap between embryonic and adult phenotypes and behaviors.
