Jeffrey Varner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, a Master of Science, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. His graduate thesis work, supervised by Professor D. Ramkrishna, focused on modeling and analysis of metabolic networks. Following his Ph.D., Varner worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biology at ETH-Zurich, where he studied signal transduction mechanisms involved in cell death under the guidance of Professor Jay Bailey. He was later a scientist at Genencor International Inc. in Palo Alto, CA, where he contributed to the discovery of novel targets for human cancers and participated in preclinical and phase-I/II studies of protein therapeutics for treating colorectal cancer and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). In 2005, he joined the faculty of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Cornell University, where his research lab develops physiochemical modeling tools aimed at rationally reprogramming human signal transduction architectures.
