Biography

Jelena Kovačević became the Dean at NYU Tandon School of Engineering in August 2018 and stepped down on August 31, 2024. As a woman head of school for a historically significant institution, she has garnered numerous accolades including being recognized on City & State's “Higher Education Power 50” and Crain’s “Notable Women in Tech” list. Kovačević is a recipient of the IEEE 2022 Engineering Medicine & Biology Society Career Achievement Award and served as a member of the Executive Board of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Engineering Deans Council. She founded the Northeast Regional Deans (NeRDs) council and prioritized the recruitment of women in technology during her tenure, doubling the national average of women in Tandon's freshman classes. She has established seven interdisciplinary areas of excellence in research and education, with Tandon recording its highest single-year research expenditures totaling $59M. Kovačević has previous experience at Bell Labs and Carnegie Mellon University, where she served as a professor and head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
