Biography

Jelke Boesten holds an MA in History and a PhD in Gender Studies from the University of Amsterdam. Before joining King’s College London, she had research positions at the University of Bradford in the Departments of International Development and Peace Studies, followed by a lectureship at the University of Leeds in Politics and International Studies. She has engaged in various prestigious fellowships and visiting professorships including a Jennings Randolph Senior Fellowship at the United States Institute of Peace and a Visiting Professorship at Pontifícia Universidad Católica del Perú. Her research primarily focuses on the intersections of gender, social policy, and violence against women in conflict and post-conflict societies, particularly in Peru. At King’s, Jelke founded the Gender Studies Network and co-convenes the Visual Embodied Methodologies Network, promoting innovative, arts-based research approaches. She has supervised numerous PhD students, guiding research on gender-based violence, social justice, and intersecting inequalities. Her current projects examine the narratives surrounding gendered violence during the Peruvian Internal Armed Conflict, funded by the British Academy, and explore transformative gender justice in post-conflict environments. Jelke is committed to finding solutions to gendered injustices through rigorous academic investigation and creative collaborative art projects that aim to foster change in socio-political contexts.
