Biography

Jelmer Vos is a historian with a particular focus on Africa, especially the Atlantic slave trade, labor, and commodity history. He is completing his PhD at the University of London (SOAS) and has previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Emory University and Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Since arriving in Glasgow in 2018, he has taught African history at Old Dominion University in Virginia. His work extensively examines the history of northern Angola, resulting in his book 'The Kingdom of Kongo,' which explores the experiences of African peoples regarding Christianity, global commerce, and colonial labor. His current research focuses on coffee cultivation in Angola, combining insights from social, economic, and environmental history. Together with Professor Jonathan Morris from Hertfordshire, he is building a research network called African Coffee Histories, which aims to connect scholars interested in the past and present of coffee cultivation in Africa. Jelmer's research interests also include the Atlantic slave trade and the social and economic history of Africa and the Global South.
