Dr. Jen Yun Chou

Biography

Jen-Yun Chou is an Adjunct Professor and Research Scientist at the Prairie Swine Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, leading the ethology welfare group within the Swine Welfare research team at the University of Saskatchewan. With a multidisciplinary background at the interface of applied animal behaviour, animal welfare, and social science, she obtained her PhD in Clinical Veterinary Sciences from the University of Edinburgh in 2019, along with an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare and an MA in Science, Technology, and Society from the Institute of History, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Jen-Yun has served as an animal welfare advisor for an international non-profit organization and has conducted research at various research institutes across Europe and North America. Her research projects include exploring the issues surrounding the ending of painful procedures for piglets, focusing on providing pigs with adequate physical and social environments. Additionally, she was involved in a postdoctoral research project on sow housing during early gestation at the Swine Teaching and Research Center of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, and was a Marie Skłodowska Curie postdoctoral fellow investigating social behaviour and social networks in pigs at the Teagasc Institute of Animal Welfare Science, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Austria. Her ongoing research collaborations span partners in Europe and Taiwan, aiming to show that improved animal welfare is beneficial and profitable for stakeholders, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of global pig welfare.
