Biography

Jena Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan. She obtained her Ph.D. in Geobiology from Caltech in 2015. Her research focuses on Geomicrobiology, Geobiology, Sedimentology, and Geochemistry, exploring the metabolic activity of microorganisms and their influence on the Earth's chemistry. Her work aims to understand the historical relationship between geology, chemistry, and biology, revealing how life impacts its surrounding geochemistry. By studying enigmatic clues left by organisms in preserved sediments and rocks, her research attempts to identify and interpret records of early life and its environmental impacts. She employs microscale and nanoscale geochemical techniques and laboratory experiments to mechanistically understand microbe-mineral interactions and biogeochemical processes.
