Biography

Jeng Yi Chong joined the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering in January 2024. His research focuses on innovating membrane technology and advanced separation processes for future sustainability. Jeng received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in the UK in 2018, an MSc (Research) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta in Canada in 2013, and a BEng with First Class Honours in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2011. Before joining the University of Southampton, Jeng was a postdoctoral researcher at the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre at NTU from 2018 to 2021, where he was awarded the NTU Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2021. His current research interest includes the development of novel membranes for advanced separations, design and synthesis of functional nanoporous materials such as polymeric thin films, porous-organic frameworks (POFs), and ceramic composites, as well as the utilization of nanostructured materials in energy storage and electrochemical separation. Additionally, he is involved in the development of ion-selective membranes for redox flow batteries and selective-electrodialysis, with a keen interest in Machine Learning applications in membrane development.
