Biography

Jennifer Barnes is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Academic Practice at the University of Southampton. She is responsible for designing and leading the university-wide ‘SoTeach’ programme aimed at postgraduate researchers. Jennifer holds a Senior Fellowship from AdvanceHE (SFHEA). Her current research focuses on pedagogies of failure, performance failure, and reworking failure, which drive increased resilience and adaptability in the contemporary landscape. Her interests intersect with ongoing research in Shakespearean stardom, considering discourses of failure and the images of actors connected to the constituent nations of the UK. Building on concepts developed in her book, 'Shakespearean Star: Laurence Olivier and National Cinema' (Cambridge University Press, 2017), Jennifer explores contemporary British identities in performance and enjoys pursuing resonances of this phenomenon with broader concerns of performance, identity, selfhood, and failure in teaching. She has taught Film, English, and Drama at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, developing research-led modules focused on stardom, British Hollywood cinema, and Renaissance Restoration theatre. With extensive experience in working with archives and special collections, she promotes practice-led methodologies in the classroom and encourages students to identify their own passions and enthusiasm while facilitating reflective conversation and innovative assessment strategies in her teaching. Her specialisms include film style, global cinemas, performance studies, and adaptation of Shakespeare.
