Jennifer Butler is a composer, educator, and flutist living in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her music has been described as beautifully remote by the Vancouver Sun, intimate by the Globe Mail, and disquieting by the Vancouver Observer. Jennifer enjoys writing for voices and collaborating with writers and poets. She works with quiet, fragile sounds juxtaposed with forceful outbursts, considering silence, color, organic change, and layered textures as important qualities of her compositions. Her works have been commissioned and performed by outstanding ensembles like the Vancouver Symphony, Emily Carr String Quartet, and Victoria Symphony. Recent projects include commissions for Vancouver Island Symphony and Blueridge Chamber Music Festival. Jennifer completed her Bachelor of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University and holds both a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in music composition from the University of British Columbia. She is also passionate about teaching and is serving as Composer Mentor for the Okanagan Symphony’s Young Composer Program from 2021 to 2024.
