Biography

Jennifer Edwards is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick, having joined the department in September 2023. She has previously taught at Queen’s College, Oxford, Shakespeare’s Globe, and Royal Holloway, University of London. Her research primarily focuses on the intersections of early modern literature, especially Shakespearean works, with medicine and philosophy. Edwards is particularly interested in how literature and medicine contribute to the formation of early modern conceptions of mental interiority and philosophical models of subjectivity. Her current book project, provisionally titled 'Ecstatic Subjects: Ecstasy in the Work of Shakespeare and His Contemporaries', explores the ecstatic experiences reflected in early modern literature. Additionally, she is investigating issues related to affect, environment, and embodiment in modern Shakespeare performances, with an interdisciplinary approach that includes collaboration with the Biology Department at Oxford. Her recent publications include works on the nuances of distraction in Shakespeare's texts and the art of medicine in Shakespeare's portrayal of bodily experiences.
