I began studying technical theatre in Toronto and before long, I was stage managing an entire run of an unforgivable musical. I completed my Master's degrees in English and Women's Studies (with a focus on writing about race and family in Dorothy West’s novels) and went on to obtain my PhD, specializing in nineteenth-century American literature. I serve as the interim editor of the Canadian Review of American Studies and have held various leadership positions, including Director of American Literatures for the Northeast Modern Language Association and President of the Canadian Association for American Studies. At the University of Waterloo, I maintain the English department blog, "Words in Place," which I encourage everyone to visit. My research areas focus on late eighteenth and nineteenth-century American literature, African American literature, and print culture. I aim to highlight and recuperate overlooked and understudied writers, expanding the understanding of the cultures of print. I'm also a creative writer with interests in poetry and children's literature.
