Biography

Jennifer Koshan is a Professor and Research Excellence Chair in Family Violence at the University of Calgary. Her research and teaching focus on equality, human rights, and legal responses to gender-based violence (GBV). Her work has been foundational in the field, with numerous publications on equality rights and GBV cited by the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2023, she and her colleagues completed a major project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council titled 'Domestic Violence and Access to Justice Across Multiple Legal Systems.' This research involved a continuing case law review and focused on the effects of coercive control in the context of recent reforms to the Divorce Act. Koshan is currently collaborating on a transdisciplinary project with a child youth advocacy centre, aimed at developing trauma-informed approaches to justice in child abuse cases, funded by Mitacs and the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute. Additionally, she leads an interprofessional education project, funded by the Taylor Institute, that has developed virtual gaming simulation modules on GBV, working in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculties of Nursing and Social Work. Koshan actively collaborates with multiple organizations advocating for women's legal education and equality rights.
