Biography

Jennifer Malcolm graduated with a First Class BSc Hons in Microbiology from Glasgow Caledonian University, which sparked her interest in host-pathogen interactions in health and disease. She pursued her PhD at the University of Glasgow, focusing on the investigation of oral biofilm development in young children and the coincident maturation of salivary immune responses. Following her PhD, she served as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow's School of Infection and Immunity, where she developed a discovery pipeline for therapeutic targets related to periodontal disease. Her work has laid the foundation for further investigations into the cellular mechanisms underlying oral health and disease. Subsequently, she became the lead post-doctoral researcher on a Versus Arthritis Research grant project, which identified a novel mechanism for the breach of immune tolerance related to non-endogenous bacterial citrullination, with significant implications for understanding the role of oral bacterial infections in driving autoimmune responses. In 2018, she took on a teaching position at the University of Glasgow Dental School, where she explores how oral bacteria exploit innate immunity to subvert adaptive immune responses and the impacts on the maintenance of immune tolerance in the oral mucosa.
