Biography

Jennifer Markides is an associate professor in the Werklund School of Education and the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta and holds a PhD in Educational Research from the University of Calgary. Markides focuses her research on holistic wellbeing, Indigenous education, and systemic change through reconciliatory action. Her work emphasizes community-engaged partnerships that are responsive to the needs and interests of Indigenous communities, utilizing Indigenous research methodologies and arts-based approaches. She has been recognized for her contributions to the field with several awards, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Canadian Association of Curriculum Studies in 2021 and the Outstanding Indigenous Scholar/Researcher Award from the Indigenous Inquiries Circle the same year. Markides has participated in various strategic initiatives and educational projects aimed at enhancing the experiences of Indigenous students in Northern Alberta Schools. She is committed to developing and innovating teaching and learning practices that foster engagement and support for Indigenous youth in education.
