Currently, she is developing a monograph titled 'Placing Local Painting in Late Imperial China' and is interested in the circulation of art objects within the medieval world system, particularly during the Great Mongol Empire. Purtle is also working on a book-length project that traces the intersections of local and global art history from the Song to Yuan dynasties. Her scholarly interests include premodern Chinese art history, visual culture, women artists, eco art, and optical media. Purtle has taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including her previous role at the University of Chicago where she mentored renowned art historian Wu Hung. She was a principal curator for the exhibition 'Reading Revolution: Art and Literacy in China’s Cultural Revolution' at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in 2016 and has co-edited a volume on modern art and visual culture in East Asia.
