The central focus of my research is to characterize the nature of memory systems, the resultant representations, and the influence of these representations on current cognitive processing. My work examines memory and cognition in neurologically-intact younger and older adults as well as neuropsychological patients using behavioral paradigms, eye-tracking, and neuroimaging techniques such as magnetoencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging. I have specifically concentrated on deficits in relational memory binding and how to overcome these deficits through an increased use of neocortical learning mechanisms, for example, by anchoring information to existing knowledge schemas and utilizing unitization strategies. Altogether, my research lab employs a converging-methodologies approach to outline the distinct neural systems and spatiotemporal dynamics that support memory and cognition.
