Biography

Jennifer Schacker is a Professor in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, where she has taught since 2002. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Folklore Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington, and a B.A. (Hons) from McGill University. Her teaching and research focus on fairy tale theatre, folk narrative history, children's literature, and material culture. Schacker's significant publications include 'Staging Fairyland: Folklore, Children's Entertainment, Nineteenth-Century Pantomime' and the 'Routledge Pantomime Reader, 1800-1900'. Her scholarly work aims to reclaim the place of popular theatre histories within folklore and fairy tale studies while developing cross-disciplinary investigations into narrative cultures. Schacker is also known for her studies on Victorian collections of fairy tales, having received the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in 2006. Additionally, she explores contemporary craft and DIY movements, especially in relation to digital technologies and social networking. Her current research touches on the narrative material cultures in children's development stories through interactions with toys and play objects. Schacker actively engages undergraduate and graduate students with innovative course designs that bridge various critical practices and research methods.
