Biography

Jennifer Stellar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, where she also directs the Health, Emotions, Altruism Lab (HEAL). She received her Ph.D. in Social-Personality Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research investigates the forces that drive prosocial behavior and morality. Specifically, she explores how prosocial emotions, such as compassion and awe, promote empathy and altruism, encourage cooperation, and enhance the health and well-being of individuals. In her work, Stellar examines how individuals can motivate moral behavior by upholding moral norms and expressing moral outrage towards transgressors. Her projects aim to answer fundamental questions about how humans can transcend self-focus to care for people, groups, and society as a whole.
