Biography

Jennifer Van Os is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Animal Welfare at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a PhD from the interdisciplinary Animal Behavior graduate program at the University of California-Davis and has conducted postdoctoral research in the Animal Welfare Program at the University of British Columbia. Her research lab focuses on understanding, evaluating, and improving the welfare of dairy animals from both biological and social science perspectives. Dr. Van Os' extension program aims to promote management practices and housing solutions that help the dairy industry adapt to scientific knowledge related to animal welfare. She is active in various professional organizations and has served as a panel manager for the USDA-NIFA-AFRI Foundational & Applied Science Program, and as a communications officer for the International Society of Applied Ethology. She has received several awards including the Excellence in Research Award from the Division of Extension at UW-Madison in 2024 and the Alfred Toepfer Faculty Fellow Award from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, UW-Madison in 2021-2022.
