Biography

Jenny Bruin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Carleton University. She completed her Ph.D. at McMaster University, where she developed a strong foundation in diabetes pathogenesis research. Her laboratory focuses on understanding the effects of environmental factors on insulin-secreting beta cells within the pancreatic islets. Research in her lab employs a diverse array of methodologies, from in vivo models utilizing both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mouse models to cutting-edge in vitro techniques involving human pluripotent stem cell differentiation into pancreatic lineage cells. Current projects aim to investigate the role of xenobiotic metabolism enzymes on beta cell function and the critical windows for beta cell development during fetal and adult life. Bruin actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in her lab and contributes significantly to understanding diabetes at a molecular level.
