Biography

Jenny Bruin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, specializing in the pathogenesis of diabetes with a focus on insulin-secreting beta cells. Her research is centered around various environmental factors that influence the endocrine pancreas during fetal development and adulthood, particularly under metabolic stress. The Bruin Lab employs a diverse range of methodologies including in vivo studies using mouse models of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as transgenic and gene knockout mutations. In vitro studies involve the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into pancreatic lineage cells, primary cultures of isolated pancreatic islets, and the use of immortalized cell lines. Currently, her lab is actively seeking undergraduate and graduate students to join various ongoing projects that investigate the effects of toxic environmental substances on beta cell function and survival, and the critical stages in the development of the beta cells.
