Biography

Jenny Slatman is a Professor of Medical Humanities at Tilburg University, within the Department of Culture Studies. She has a robust academic background, having studied Physiotherapy at Deventer Academy (1986-1990), and pursued philosophical anthropology at the University of Amsterdam (1990-1995) and Université Paris-Est Créteil (1997-1998). Slatman obtained her PhD at the University of Amsterdam in 2001, where she focused on topics related to cultural analysis. Prior to her current position, she was a post-doctoral researcher at Maastricht University from 2001 to 2006, and has held several academic roles including Assistant Professor at Tilburg University and Associate Professor at Maastricht University. Her research specializes in the intersection of body, embodiment, expression, and contemporary art within healthcare and medical practices, employing both theoretical and empirical qualitative methodologies. Slatman coordinates a new Master track in Health Humanities and teaches courses on Visual Culture and the Body. Her research themes include cultural representations of health and illness, disability studies, and phenomenology.
