Biography

Jenny Slatman is a Professor of Medical Humanities at Tilburg University within the Department of Culture Studies. She holds a background in physiotherapy from Deventer Academy (1986-1990) and has studied philosophical anthropology at the University of Amsterdam (1990-1995) and Université Paris-Est Créteil (1997-1998). She completed her PhD at the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (1996-2001) and has been involved in significant post-doctoral research projects at Maastricht University, including 'The Mediated Body' (2001-2006). From 2004 to 2010, she served as an Assistant Professor in the philosophy department at Tilburg University, later moving to Maastricht University as an Associate Professor in Health, Ethics, and Society (2010-2016) where she led the VIDI research project 'Bodily Integrity Blemished Bodies', teaching future medical students. Her research focuses on the meaning of the body, embodiment, and expression within contemporary healthcare and medical practices, combining theoretical analysis with empirical qualitative and ethnographic research. She coordinates a new Master track in Health Humanities and teaches courses on visual culture and the body in social sciences.
