Biography

Jens Nielsen is a Full Professor in Systems Biology at Chalmers University of Technology. He earned his MSc in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the Danish Technical University in 1989. Since 1998, he has led a substantial independent research group, significantly contributing to the field with over 700 publications that are cited more than 65,000 times, resulting in an impressive H-factor of 118. He has served as a Fulbright visiting professor at MIT from 1995 to 1996 and directed the Center for Microbial Biotechnology at DTU prior to his recruitment to Chalmers. At Chalmers, he heads an area focused on Advanced Life Science Engineering, integrated across departments and involving over 200 researchers. In addition, he co-founded the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability and has held the position of Chief Science Officer from 2013 to 2018. As CEO of the BioInnovation Institute in Denmark since 2019, he supports translational research and the establishment of spin-out companies in life sciences. Over his career, he has supervised more than 100 PhD candidates and 75 postdoctoral researchers, becoming a recognized expert and mentor in his field. He has received numerous awards, including the Nature Mentor Award and the ENI Award, and is an elected member of several prestigious academies, including the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Microbiology, reflecting his significant contributions to science and engineering.
