Dr. Jens Sørensen

Biography

Jens Christian Hedemann Sørensen is a Clinical Professor Chair in the Department of Neurosurgery at Aarhus University. His department is considered one of the leading neurosurgical departments in Scandinavia. He is actively involved in both patient treatment and clinical scientific leadership. His research primarily focuses on neurobiology, neurosurgery, and neuroimaging. His experience includes molecular and cellular neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neuromodulation, deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and therapeutic stem cell transplantation. Recently, he introduced MR-guided Focused Ultrasound as a non-invasive treatment method for severe essential tremor. Throughout his early career, he studied the transplantation of fetal rat brain tissue in models of ischemic and traumatic lesions, employing neuronal tracing and electrophysiology to elucidate the neuroplastic mechanisms of brain repair. His current research involves translating mechanisms of brain repair into patient treatments, developing large animal models for neurological diseases, and trialing innovative neuromodulatory devices. He has also pioneered new techniques that bridge medical imaging with histology and spatial transcriptomics for stroke research.
