Jernej Barbic received an undergraduate Mathematics degree from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. He was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT from 2007 to 2009. In August 2009, he joined the faculty of the Computer Science Department at the University of Southern California. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2015 and became a Full Professor in 2021. His research focuses on computer graphics, particularly on interdisciplinary problems in computer animation, graphics, simulation, mechanics, and medical imaging. His main area of interest is in physically based simulation of digital humans, animals, plants, and man-made objects, emphasizing applications in the film industry, computer games, interactive CAD/CAM, and virtual medicine. He also has interests in numerical mathematics, finite element methods, applied mechanics, collision detection, contact modeling, medical imaging, human body modeling, and haptic rendering.
