Biography

Jeroen Gunning is a Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and Conflict Studies at the Department of Political Economy and the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies at King's College London. He also serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University and at the Middle East Centre, London School of Economics. Jeroen is a pioneering figure in the field of critical terrorism studies and has taught and advised numerous policymakers and civil society organizations. His research focuses on political mobilization, particularly the interplay of Islamist social movements, religion, and political contestation in the Middle East, examining the causes and effects of political violence. He employs social movement theory to analyze political mobilization and violence in contexts like Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt. Jeroen has led significant research projects funded by various institutions, exploring themes like sectarianism in the Middle East and the dynamics of armed transnational groups. He welcomes PhD applications on topics related to political mobilization and violence, as well as everyday peace practices in the Middle East.
