Biography

Jeroen van Zanten is a senior lecturer in Modern History at the University of Amsterdam. He studied history, social, and political philosophy and obtained his PhD from Leiden University in 2004 with a thesis on the political culture of Northern Netherlands during the reign of King William. From 2004 to 2006, he was associated as a lecturer and post-doc at the Department of Political History at Utrecht University, focusing on political reconstruction in France and the Netherlands during the years 1813-1815. His publications include a scientific biography of King William II and works on the Battle of Waterloo. Currently, he is researching citizenship concepts in 18th to 20th century Netherlands and contributing to an English-language handbook on Dutch history. Since 2020, he is also involved with a Scandinavian research project on Nordic civil society.
