Biography

Jérôme Tamburini is a prominent academic in the field of translational research on oncohaematology, specializing in hematological malignancies, including lymphomas and leukaemias. He obtained his medical degree from Paris Descartes University and specialized in clinical haematology. He also holds a Master's degree in genetics and a PhD in medicine. His research primarily focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and aims to develop innovative therapeutic approaches. Tamburini has been actively involved in studying the role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in AML, demonstrating the anti-leukemic effects of metformin and creating a specific AMPK activator with potent anti-leukemic activity. His research includes analyzing mutations in FLT3 kinase, which are found in 30% of AML cases and have adverse prognostic implications. Under his leadership, new methods utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 technology have been implemented to identify genetic alterations leading to oncogenic RAS activation in AML. He has been recognized with a prestigious Fulbright scholarship and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. In 2016, he was appointed as a university professor at Paris Descartes University and recently joined the Centre for Translational Research Onco-Haematology at UNIGE in 2018 as an Associate Professor, also working as a physician at the oncology department of the HUG.
