Biography

Jerry X. Mitrovica joined Harvard University in 2009 as the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science. His work focuses on the Earth's response to external and internal forcings over time scales ranging from seconds to billions of years. He has written extensively on topics related to the connection between mantle convective flow and the geological record, the rotational stability of the Earth and terrestrial planets, as well as ice age geodynamics. A significant theme in his studies has been sea-level change, with particular emphasis on the critical events during ice age climate and the sea-level fingerprints of modern polar ice sheet collapse. Mitrovica is also the Director of the Earth Systems Evolution Program at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and has served as the J. Tuzo Wilson Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto. He has received several prestigious awards including the Arthur L. Day Medal from the Geological Society of America and the W.S. Jardetsky Medal from Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America, and was a past Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
