Biography

Jerry White teaches and writes about cinema, literature, and culture in Quebec, Canada, and Europe. He is the author of 'It's Nation Time: Progressive Defence,' which was shortlisted for the 2025 Saskatchewan Book Awards. His published works include analyses of filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage, Jean-Luc Godard, Anne-Marie Miéville, John Berger, and Alain Tanner. He also edited (with Toner Quinn) a collection of the works of Irish writer Desmond Fennell and anthologies like 'Canadian Cinema: North Everything' and 'Cinema Canada.' Additionally, he authored a catalogue for a retrospective of Swiss-Canadian filmmaker and photographer Peter Mettler at the Toronto Film Festival in 2006. Jerry has contributed to 'Cinema Scope' throughout its 25-year existence and spent a decade as a film critic for the Dalhousie Review. He has written op-eds for 'Le Devoir' and has been an active member of various academic organizations, including serving as president of the Film Studies Association of Canada and the Canadian Association for Irish Studies. Currently, he is on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Canadian Journal of Irish Studies and New Hibernia Review. He also serves as an adjunct professor in French at Dalhousie University.
