Biography

Jesper Lagergren is a Professor of Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer at King’s College London and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He coordinates the Gastrointestinal Cancer Programme at KCL and has a collaborative role as a Professor of Surgery at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. Lars took his medical degree (MD) in 1989 and became a specialist in surgery by 1996, achieving his doctorate in 1999. He was appointed Professor of Surgery at Karolinska Institutet in 2006 and assumed his current role at King’s in 2010. Throughout his career, he has supervised 37 PhD candidates, with 18 as the main supervisor, and mentored numerous postdoctoral researchers. His research primarily focuses on the causes, prevention, and treatment of esophageal and gastric cancer-related disorders, particularly gastroesophageal reflux disease and obesity. Lagergren's work has earned him recognition in the field, including contributions to significant studies on cancer incidence and treatment outcomes.
