Dr. Jesse Mccoy

Biography

Jesse McCoy is an Associate Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Civil Justice Clinic at Duke University. He teaches a seminar course and mentors students in developing essential civil litigation skills, overseeing cases for indigent clients who cannot obtain adequate representation within the traditional civil justice system. His work involves a partnership with Legal Aid of North Carolina. A native of Durham, McCoy operated a boutique solo practice for four years in Raleigh before joining Legal Aid as a staff attorney in Winston-Salem and Durham. He has litigated a variety of cases across several practice areas, including criminal defense, personal injury, public housing evictions, voucher terminations, landlord-tenant disputes, and foreclosure defense. McCoy has served as an advocate for victims of domestic violence across multiple counties and has taught at North Carolina Central University and Wake Forest University Schools of Law. He joined the Duke Law faculty full-time in 2017, having received his B.A. from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2005 and his J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2008. In addition to his legal work, McCoy is a fiction writer and has published two novels. In his personal life, he enjoys watching professional football alongside his wife and child, supporting the Carolina Panthers.
