Jesse Stewart is an award-winning composer, percussionist, visual artist, researcher, and educator, widely published in subjects including jazz, improvisation, hip hop, and experimental music. He has authored nine book chapters and is currently working on a book with Ajay Heble on the pedagogy of improvisation and co-editing another volume on Pauline Oliveros's Adaptive Use Musical Instrument. Stewart has been a prominent figure in the music community, giving over 100 public talks and conferences and performing with numerous musical luminaries. His work includes a self-titled debut album with Stretch Orchestra, awarded 'Instrumental Album of the Year' at the JUNO Awards in 2012. He has worked with various organizations to create inclusive music opportunities, teaching free university-level courses for marginalized communities and conducting numerous workshops across North America. Furthermore, he played a significant role in developing adaptive technologies for individuals with disabilities, such as the Adaptive Use Musical Instrument (AUMI), which enables those with limited mobility to create music. Stewart received the Order of Ottawa in 2014, recognizing his contributions to community health through music and art. He is also a co-investigator on multiple large-scale research initiatives aimed at exploring the intersections of music, health, and education.
