Biography

Jessica L. Beyer is an Assistant Teaching Professor and the lead of the Cybersecurity Initiative at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. Dr. Beyer teaches courses on the politics of cybersecurity and supervises student research within the Cybersecurity Initiative Global Research Groups. Her research focuses on the interplay between international technology politics, the dynamics of online communities, and issues of disinformation. Currently, she is involved in a project analyzing the information spread related to COVID-19 on Twitter across Louisiana and Washington during the pandemic. Jessica also works on the security of the Internet of Things as a member of the Cybersecurity in the Built Environment Lab. Her past research has examined political mobilization within highly populated online communities, including forums and multiplayer online games, with a focus on actors such as Anonymous hacktivists and digital pirates. She won the Association of Internet Researchers’ Dissertation Award in 2012 and published her book, 'Expect Online Communities Political Mobilization,' with Oxford University Press in 2014.
