Biography

Jessica Cardin is a Professor at Yale School of Medicine, where she serves as the Gordon M. Shepherd Professor in the Department of Neuroscience. Her research focuses on the dynamic interactions between neurons in the visual cortex and how these contribute to sensory processing and behavior. In particular, her laboratory investigates the roles of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in shaping visual perception, employing techniques such as optogenetics and both intracellular and extracellular electrophysiological recordings in awake behaving animals. Her work aims to elucidate how neuronal dynamics affect gain control processes in the brain and how these mechanisms may be altered in various disease states such as epilepsy and schizophrenia. Dr. Cardin earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and holds a BA in Biology from Cornell University, which she completed in 1997. She closely collaborates with other researchers in the field and has received multiple awards recognizing her contributions to biomedical research.
