Dr. Jessica Dempsey

Biography

Jessica Dempsey is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. She focuses her research on environmental politics and political ecology, aiming to understand urgent global issues such as biodiversity loss, drought, poverty, and climate change. Dempsey investigates how economic, scientific, and cultural factors influence environmental policy and conservation efforts. Her current research projects include a political economy explanation of extinction, particularly concerning Canadian wildlife, and a critical examination of financial approaches to conservation. Dempsey employs a variety of methodologies from political ecology, feminist political economy, economic geography, and science studies to engage with complex relationships in environmental governance.
